I'll have the chicken breast...

When I think of sex in advertising, my mind imediately jumps to one thing: Hooters. After all, it is that one restaurant where not only is sex a major part of the advertising, but also a part of the experience when you actually go there! Though at the same time they hold it back just enough that it's legal for men to bring their children into the restaurant with them. (I would never do this, though I suppose I would never go to Hooters in the first place. Pretty girls make me nervous... Still, I have a number of friends who have been familiar with Hooters since a young age.)

Ok, just so you know I'm writing this in the school library and there is nothing more awkward than watching Hooters commercials in public places.

But seriously, look at this commercial! Even in the menu they work in all kinds of sexual innuendos. "Try our famous wings... naked." Not to mention the one telling him the menu items is wearing a tight, low-cut tang-top and appears to be standing in front of some sort of fan. They are absolutely shameless in how they are using sex to sell food! Of course, for the Hooters goer it's never about food, it's about the experience.

Needless to say, there are plenty of references in the bible condemning this sort of thing. Just look at the Ten Commandments, which condemn a man for coveting another man's wife  (lust). It's an industry built on lust! Better yet, look at Matthew 5:28. "Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultry in heart." If you really take this passage seriously, then when (if you ever do) walk into Hooters know that you are absolutely SURROUNDED by adulturers! This, however, is the culture of the day. Sex sells, and furthermore sex is seen as a natural part of life that all people, regardless of race or gender, should be allowed to partake in in any matter they desire.

So, instead of just condemning Hooters and their patrons of these evils, I also want to speak of our (the Christians) role in all this. In Matthew 5:14 Christ says that we are the "light of the world." As the followers of Christ we are to be examplars, rejecting this disgraceful life style and instead seeking after Christ. Men, we are called to respect women! Not to go about objectifying them as Hooters would like us to do. Be the light of the world. Though, be aware that in a world this dark, even the faintest light will shine for miles.
